Mummy’s Day Out & Good Thinking Partnership with Newham Council

This 12 week initiative, in partnership with Good Thinking and Newham Council, was a community-focused project designed to support and empower mothers in the borough of Newham. This collaboration aimed to promote well-being, mental health awareness, and social connection for mothers navigating parenthood.

As part of the project, we raised awareness about the NHS-approved Good Thinking resource, highlighting its benefits as a valuable mental health resource for parents. Additionally, our weekly walks served as a peer support space, providing mothers with a chance to connect, share experiences, and offer mutual encouragement in a relaxed and supportive environment.

This initiative successfully fostered a sense of community, enhanced access to mental health resources, and supported mothers in prioritising their well-being.

WHAT MADE YOU JOIN MAMA-MEET UP?

I was drawn to the mums’ walks because they offered a chance to connect with like-minded individuals, enjoy the outdoors, and build lasting friendships. The walks were a meaningful activity not just for me but also for my children. My 3-year-old loved riding his scooter or bike, and my 11-month-old enjoyed being in the buggy, looking around and watching his brother play.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MADE THE SESSIONS A SUCCESS?

The walks were successful because they fostered a strong sense of sisterhood and belonging. Walking in the park was an amazing experience—it felt great to be active, surrounded by nature, and spending quality time with my children. The family-friendly environment, including a clean and welcoming café for refreshments, added a special touch. The leaders, Jess, Irene and Nikeisha created a comfortable, safe space where everyone felt heard and valued. Convenient timing, an ideal location, and the ability to include my children made the walks even more enjoyable.

WHAT MADE A DIFFERENCE TO YOUR EXPERIENCE?

The mums’ walks felt more like a nurturing community than a formal program. Jess, Irene and Nikeisha were instrumental in making the sessions special. Their warmth, empathy, and attentiveness created a space where we could connect deeply and authentically. The thoughtfulness in planning—from family-friendly facilities to refreshments—made a lasting impact.

DID YOU HAVE ANY CHALLENGES IN JOINING THE SESSIONS?

At first, I was unsure if I’d feel comfortable opening up or if it would be manageable with two young children. However, the leaders’ support, the welcoming environment, and the structure of the sessions made it easy to attend. My son’s enjoyment of the walks—riding his scooter or bike—and the fact that my 11-month-old loved being in the buggy and observing everything around him made the experience stress-free and fulfilling.
